Does Manic Panic work on dark hair?
Manic Panic dyes contain no chemical bleaches or peroxides, so they are best used on light hair colours. For darker, brunette, or black hair, pre-lightening is essential before application of Manic Panic colour. Why? Because dark and black pigments are super strong and dominate other colours. For Manic Panic colours to work on dark hair, you will need to bleach your hair to light blonde first. If you attempt to use Manic Panic on golden brown, unbleached hair, you will see tints of colour in bright sunlight, but you won't achieve a colour strength that matches the advertised product colour.

However, this may be precisely the effect you want to achieve from your Manic Panic hair colour. If you only want to see very subtle glints of colour in the sunlight, then Manic Panic hair colour is acceptable to use straight onto dark hair.

How will Manic Panic colours take to my natural hair?
If your hair is naturally a dark brunette shade, the semi-permanent Manic Panic colours won't be visible without pre-lightening your hair. If your natural hair is fair or light brown, the hair dye will show up with a lesser intensity or vibrancy than on lightened hair.

Dye adheres faster and better to hair that has been made more porous by the bleaching process, so When Manic Panic semi-permanent hair dyes are applied to completely natural hair, they wash out a little quicker than they do on bleached hair.

Leaving the hair dye in longer will provide some natural hair results, but it will look more like a tint than a solid dyed colour. The good news is that because Manic Panic hair colours are safe, you won't damage your hair if you leave it in longer than the recommended 30 minutes.

How can I get the exact shade on the colour swatch?
To match your shade with the colour swatches on the packaging, you will need to lighten your hair down to a pale blonde colour.

The pre-lightening stage is vitally important, as it is the degree of porosity in the hair which controls the degree to which the dye takes. Even natural blondes may need to undertake the pre-lightening step to achieve the same result as the colour swatch. Why? Because the bleaching process increases the hair's porosity and allows the pigment to attach to the hair.

Don't want to pre-lighten your hair? Some colours will show up better than others, including Enchanted Forest, Deep Purple Dream, Green Envy, or Raven. Alternatively, you can try a shade from the Amplified collection, designed with a more potent formula that lasts up to 30% longer than the classic cream formula.

It's effortless to apply your Manic Panic hair colour to pre-lightened hair at home. Here's how!

1. Wash hair with a deep cleansing or clarifying shampoo to open up the cuticle.

2. Dry your hair with a hairdryer.

3. Apply the Manic Panic hair colour section by section and comb through for complete coverage.

4. Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap.

5. Use a hairdryer to apply heat which increases the absorption of the dye.

6. Leave for 30 to 45 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with cool water, drying and styling your hair.

Voila! A simple, quick, and easy way to have glorious hair that won't go unnoticed!

If you care for your hair before using Manic Panic, you will benefit from more beautiful results. Using the right hair care, shampoos, conditioners, and regular treatments will ensure hair takes to Manic Panic better.

Always follow the product maintenance guide to ensure hair colour has longevity, the chance of fading is reduced, and there is no need for re-colouring.

Is Manic Panic hair dye permanent?
No. Manic Panic hair dye is a vegetable-dye-based semi-permanent colourant that will gradually fade and wash out. Depending on how you care for your hair, the classic cream formula will generally last in pre-lightened hair for two to four weeks, and the Amplified Formula will last approximately four to six weeks.

How should I care for my hair when I have used Manic Panic hair colour?
Use only sulphate-free colour-safe haircare after applying your Manic Panic hair colour.

Avoid using shampoos with high quantities of sodium chloride and oils as well. Wash your hair only when needed, using sulphate-free, colour safe shampoo and conditioner in cool - not hot - water.

As your colour will fade out with each wash, use the Manic Panic dry shampoo - aka Hair Freshener - in between washes to prolong the life of your colour.
