What does Sustainable Salon mean?
Sustainable Salons are an Australia social enterprise that supports over 1,500 hair salons, barbershops, beauty salons, dermal clinics, and pet-grooming salons in Australia and New Zealand to collect 95% of the salon bin and redirecting material for reuse, recycle and repurpose.
Since its inception in 2015, more than 1.7 million kg of materials has been diverted from landfill and Sustainable Salons have become the largest donor to the medical wig industry and the #1 directory for hair and beauty in the Pacific.
How is Hairhouse sustainable?
Since partnering with Sustainable Salons in 2018-19, Hairhouse has diverted up to 95% of salon resources from landfill to recycling.
Impressed? Here’s more stats:
5,591kg = the amount of hair collected from Hairhouse salons to be repurposed into hair booms. This organic alternative to damaging synthetic booms, hair booms are effective for soaking up oil spills with a standard reusable boom absorbing up to 4L.
285,222 = the number of ponytails collected from Hairhouse Sustainable Salons this year. Plaited ponytails 20cm or longer, human hair ponytails, 100% human hair extension ponytails and coloured and natural hair ponytails are all able to be sent to wigmakers and charitable organisations to be made into charitable wigs or to fund life-changing programs.
350,470 = the number of meals donated from the proceeds of donated general waste to help feed those going hungry. Sustainable Salons recycle their materials with donations going to Oz Harvest and Kiwi Harvest who provide meals for those the community with just $1 providing two hearty meals to those in need.
24,858kg = the weight of metals collected by Hairhouse Salons in 2024. Re-melting used aluminium saves up to 95% of the energy and 97% of the water needed to produce the primary product and is the most valuable material Sustainable Salons recycles. Used foils, cans and colour tubes can be sent back to the salon as brand spanking new, completely recycled products.
38,131kg = the amount of paper collected from Hairhouse salons in 2024 and saved from landfill. Paper products are sent to specialised recycling partners who grade, sort, shred and bale it. These bales then get sent to paper mills to make new, recycled paper products.
28,858kg = the number of plastics collected by Hairhouse for recycling. A hugely impactful step in the Sustainable Salons cycle, plastic recycling from salon waste is given a meaningful second life through innovative recycling and upcycling initiatives.
