Piercing FAQ

Got a pressing piercing question? Hairhouse are happy to help answer it!

  • Under no circumstances will ANY piercing be conducted on any person under the age of 16 years without a ‘Consent Form’ signed by their parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must sign the consent form and provide evidence of guardianship (e.g. Medicare card with both names on it) – signing of the consent form by a parent or guardian must be witnessed by the Body Piercer.
  • Persons aged 16 years and over do not need parental permission to obtain a piercing except in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, where the legal age for piercing without parental consent is 18 years of age. Notwithstanding, in Western Australia an ear lobe piercing only may be conducted a person who has reached the age of 16 years.
  • Except in New South Wales, nipple piercings will not be conducted on a person under the age of 18 years. In New South Wales, nipple piercings may be conducted on persons aged 16 years and over.
  • Under no circumstances will any piercing service be conducted on the genitals or genital area.

We treat the piercing process as a private one. Therefore, we ask that you only bring one guest for support/high-fives, and no photos or videos are taken.

Piercings take time to heal, so we only use the highest quality jewellery to reduce the risk of infection. These metal materials include the highest grade of surgical steel and titanium, including the premium F136 Titanium.

Wrong! You must avoid swimming or wetting the pierced area for a period of time post-piercing. Your Hairhouse piercing professional will advise you on this timeframe.

Not exactly. Decorative hoops and costume jewellery move around in the piercing hole too much, and the metals used may not aid the healing process. Hairhouse are proud to stock the best piercing jewellery in the business. We refuse to use inferior materials in any of our jewellery making the quality of our jewellery the best in the market, helping to prevent infection effectively.

Absolutely. But remember, ears come in all shapes and sizes so the results may vary depending on the symmetry and shape of your ears. Our Hairhouse piercing professionals will take you through the most realistic options and exactly what will and won’t work for your ear, before you take the piercing plunge!

There is a good supply of blood flow to the lips so piercings in this area can heal quite successfully, however, diligent care is vital. Any oral piercings must be cleaned with an oral saline solution twice a day and after eating. Oh, and no smoking and alcohol until the healing process is complete, got it?

The nasal passage can be a tricky one as it is constantly producing mucous which can ‘plug up’ the piercing hole with dirt. Gross, right? Avoid this at all costs by being vigilant about keeping the area clean. Your Hairhouse piercer will create an at-home plan for this.

Swelling, red patchiness and fluid secretion may be a sign of irritation, not infection. Don’t stress! The first thing you need to do is make an appointment with your Hairhouse piercing professional (all part of the Priority Piercing Plan) and if there is an infection, your piercer will advise you on the next steps. Do not remove your jewellery as it may trap the infection inside the piercing channel. Most importantly, keep the area as clean and as dry as possible and we can help with the rest.

Yes, but be gentle with your piercing. The area is particularly fragile, so any bumps, scrapes or rough contact – as minor as fiddling with your piercing, bumping it on your pillow during sleep or getting a scratch during a sports game - can cause inflammation and infection.
